The impact of credit cooperatives in Brazil
According to the Central Bank, credit cooperatives are present in more than half of the country's cities and represent 7.5% of the total assets of the National Financial System (SFN).
Sicredi, together with Fipe (Fundação Instituto de Pesquisas Econômicas), carried out a survey in 2019 and found that in the regions where there are one or more cooperatives, the aggregate impact in one year was more than R$48 billion, 70,000 new companies and 278,000 jobs.
More business, jobs and quality of life
The Fipe survey evaluated economic data from all Brazilian cities with and without credit cooperatives between 1994 and 2017.
Cross-referencing with information from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), it came to the conclusion that cooperativism increases the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of municipalities, creates more job vacancies and increases the number of commercial establishments, stimulating local entrepreneurship.
